1.0 - Searching for Addresses
The Journey Planner searches a gazetter of street names and postcodes of
Greater London and surrounding environs to find a match for the start and
destination.
To create a Journey Plan it is necessary to submit the Start and Destination
at the same time. The routing engine will then return all the possible
options into drop down selection lists beneath each text entry field.
If you have entered the exact postcode there will only be one result
returned but if you entered High Street there are 39 potential streets to
choose from.
The search response is limited to 50 answers so if you entered SE5 the
search results will list the options from SE5 0AA to SE5 0GX.
Clicking on the correct entry in the selection list will repopulate the
relevant text entry field with the database value as opposed to the actual
text entered by the user.
Each street name in the gazetter also has a postcode sector at the end of
the text string for example SHENLEY ROAD SE5 8
To narrow down your search enter the full streetname coma space and the
first part of the postcode.
The Journey Planner is unable to accept common abbreviations such as Rd or
Gdns.
After confirmation that the start and destination are correct the user must
click on the Go button again to get a route plan.
1.2 - Journey Planner Results
The Journey Planner will supply a turn by turn route list connected to a map
of the route. Each street name in the route has additional information
including the Department of Transport road number (e.g. A4) and a Local or
National cycle network number where available.
1.3 - Using the Zoom Controls
At the start of each line in the route list is a radio button. Clicking on
this button will reload the map with zoom buttons just above the map image
allowing the user to zoom in and out to see more detail at street level.
Select a street to view in detail and then zoom in to a suitable scale. Pan
across the route by clicking on other street names in the route list. The
map will reload at the same scale at a new location.
