The London Cycle Network is essentially a collection of poorly-maintained, far-too-narrow, badly-signed bits-of-routes, large parts of which can't be used safely anyway because they have cars parked in them (perfectly legally in many cases because the routes are more-often-than-not marked only by a cycle symbol on the road or a dashed line). End of rant.

Maybe one day government in London will take cyclists seriously.

I very rarely use cycle paths........pyscho-paths since you would have to be pretty mental to use them. They make you give way at left hand turns, they are full of glass and nails and they encourage you to dismount and cross junctions as a pedestrian, because walking in the road is much safer than cycling across!! yeah right!

I do wear lycra, because lycra is designed to be worn when cycling, like bike leathers are for motorbikes, apparently that is frowned upon in London by other road users. So to let them know what I think of them I ride atleast 1 metre from the curb and further as I approach junctions because as far as I am concerned, nobody is cutting me up. If that means cars have to wait behind me, so be it, my priority is staying alive not keeping drivers happy.
And since my speed is usually close to 24mph there isn't really any need for a car to over take me in london.
I once performed an experiment with my girlfriend, driving across london early on a Sunday morning (minimal traffic from old kent road cutting straight north to camden and beyond) and our average speed was 13 mph despite driving at the speed limit when possible, hence cars don't need to overtake bikes, especially in rush hour!

Oh, and I jump lights, so bite me!! My excuse being..If cars aren't supposed to enter cycle lanes and the junction is a straight road with another road joining from the right, why can't a cyclist carry straight on without being in the way of traffic joining from the right?

and that is my rant!

That is hardly a reason, pedestrians in this country can cross anywhere at any time. Am I supposed to stop just in case one steps out in front of me, or use common sense and stop when necessary?

"pedestrians in this country can cross anywhere at any time." Er... No they can't. They'd get run over. Have you seen the fear in the eyes of people trying to cross the road? All the people trying to use the roads need to share. And that mean everyone has to wait at some point, including us as cyclists.

"Am I supposed to stop just in case one steps out in front of me"

Yes!

I know people don't look. I've hit someone. But the pedestrian's sense of being under attack from the constant noise and fumes of the motor traffic and the danger of getting run over (even when it's supposedly safe to cross when you're around) makes being outside on the street unhuman, ugly and stressful which is horrible.

I think dog mess on the pavement is more a worry than cyclists!

In response to Sue: Why “Jump” a green light? Because 20-30 pedestrians are crossing during a red man, making it impossible to get round them.

Why should I stop for them when it’s MY TURN TO PASS?

There are 3 ways pedestrians obstruct cyclists :

1- Crossing during a red man / green light.

2-Walking or loitering on the road, or road level cycle paths.

3-Walking or loitering on Pavement level cycle paths.

The only Justifiable pedestrian complaint is about long range pavement cycling, the rest is their own fault.
